Here in the Carolina states, we have a fluctuating climate, ranging from heat and unbearable humidity to frigid, freezing rain and snowfall. Too much sun is too much sun. Just as too much cold rain is too much cold rain. Even if you have the most technologically advanced air cooler or furnace, the bills are still enormous.
On sunny winter days, the rays of direct light can help to heat the interior of your home. On the other hand, in late summer afternoons, blocking the harsh rays is essential. Two of the most energy-efficient window treatments we carry at Shade Above are cellular and roller shades. In both hot and cold climates, they each offer better thermal performance than other traditional window coverings.
Cellular Shades
Cellular Shades are often referred to as Honeycomb shades because of their honeycomb cells. These shades can roll up from the bottom or the top. Their cells trap the air coming from the outdoors between the window and shade. Window side tracks can also be installed in order to create an even snugger fit to the window frame. Their cord-free technology makes them a safe option for homes with small children or curious cats. At Shade Above, we carry three options from the Hunter Douglas Collection.
First are the Hunter Douglas Duette® Honeycomb Shades. These shades are great for wide windows and can even be used to cover tricky skylights. They also have great light and privacy control, so you can not only control heat but how bright and lines of sight. If you want even more insulating ability, Hunter Douglas Duette® Architella® Honeycomb Shades features a honeycomb within a honeycomb design that is even more effective at trapping air and stopping heat transfer across your windows. We also carry the Hunter Douglas Applause® Honeycomb Shades, which come in a wide range of colors and fabrics that make it easy to decorate your windows any way you want.
Roller Shades
Roller Shades provide superior insulation because either a semi-opaque or fully opaque fabric is wholly rolled over the window. These shades can also be rolled up from top to bottom, letting you select your light and room’s overall temperature comfort.
Just remember that the thicker the density of your roller fabric, the more energy-efficient it will be. Some might even choose a quilted fabric – like a blanket for your windows.
At Shade Above, we carry a variety of roller shade styles from the Hunter Douglas Collection, with two styles offering the best insulation. Sonnette® Roller Shades combine the energy efficiency of cellular shades with the ease of use and operation of a roller shade.
